Whoa, you’re lucky, EW and SR. If I was at a hard keyboard, I would be begging to differ — which would come as no surprise to at least one of you.

So just a tidbit or two…

The big issues in the promotional BS of the Declaration of Independence is fallout from the crown needing to defend its colonies from the war the colonists incited from let’s say excessive barbarism targeted at indigenous peoples. (I refer to the French and Indian.)

The other biggy was fear of crown restrictions on the human chattel business. Back ca 1776, the crown was starting to reduce the slavery which, of course, was the heart of the American colonies’ economy.

Being a South-dominated nation, it was still full steam ahead for slavery ca 1861. The crown, by and by, had ended it years earlier and in a manner that negated any warfare-like responses from slave owners — eg the owners were paid off. (Not that such a thing was possible here. Then as now, Southern dominated is the way for the shittiest possible reason.)

So, yay, independence.

As for the Alien and Sedition act, it’s not exactly a scandal, yet it was much worse IMO. So scandal isn’t the word.

What I’ve been contemplating: The last defense of the Civil War is that it freed the slaves. Problem with that is that it’s way after the fact. As noted above, it would have likely been ended earlier without independence. Which is to say that is some huge proof that maybe freedom could have happened sooner and more peacefully without independence.

All of which is to say that there are scandals and there are scandals.

Happy 4th, all!

Was the "deep freezer and fur coat" bribe some sort of package deal? Get a walk-in freezer AND a fur coat to stay toasty when you go in to get more ground chuck?

Should be required reading in every elementary school across the land. (Get 'em while they're young, I say.)

Good idea. We can also prepare a cleaned-up, curse-fee version of The Split, or even an illustrated version, for school distribution. Right, Ellis?

Absolutely right, Steve. On it.

Yes, you are a writer. I am, too. Is Ellis the Ellis Weiner who used to write for the National Lampoon. He wrote some funny stuff and I wish the Lampoon was still around. But that’s the way things go.

Later!

I am! Thanks, John. I wish it was still here, too.

Another great article the ending wasn't exactly a secret but then again that's old fashioned in the Trump regime the corruption is right out in the open or at least a lot of lol!
